Please join the Los Angeles City Historical Society for a special preview tour and sneak peek of all five stories and eight lands of Clifton’s Republic on Saturday, November 2 at 5pm.
ABOUT THE TOUR
Clifton’s (as it’s affectionately known by millions of fans) has always defied definition. From the moment Clifford Clinton unveiled his fanciful forest themed Brookdale Cafeteria in the 1930s, it redefined dining as a celebration of the senses and a distinctive, unparallelled experience. Part dining hall and cafeteria (with a charitable and progressive “pay as you wish” ethos inspired by the Golden Rule), part community gathering space (and known hub for starving artists who appreciated that ethos), part architectural wonderland, part entertainment venue, part family friendly getaway, and part fantastical escape for a society enduring Depression Era woes. It was, and is, an environment designed to nourish the body, soul, spirit, and imagination.
And now, the cultural and historic icon is reopening! Following a flood that forced its closure for several years, the downtown LA landmark is once again open – beginning with Pacific Seas (its famed tiki bar), The Monarch lounge, and The Gothic lounge (all open now). All eight “lands” of the Republic will return by March 2025, including a never-before-open-to-the-public space, Shadowbox.
You’re invited to a special preview tour and sneak peek of all five stories and eight lands of Clifton’s Republic on Saturday, November 2 at 5pm. Owner Andrew Meieran, who has painstakingly restored and preserved Clifton’s (including much of its original 1930s aesthetic and fantasy architecture), will be your docent, walking you through the venue’s storied history, antique and unusual pieces, and what’s to come for this imaginative space in its latest incarnation.
Guests (21 and over) are invited to continue on to Pacific Seas aka the World’s Greatest Adventure Bar after the tour, and will be gifted 1 token for a complimentary tiki cocktail.
