About the Los Angeles Public Library History and Genealogy Department

The History Collection includes hundreds of books related to social, cultural and political aspects of Los Angeles’ storied history. The department also maintains both the California Subject and Biography Indexes, retrospective databases indexing selected citations from newspapers, magazines, and books about Los Angeles events, landmarks and historical players throughout the city’s past. The Map Collection features historic street guides of Los Angeles, historic maps of Los Angeles on aperture cards, Sanborn Fire Insurance maps of California cities, and United States Geological Survey topographic maps. The Genealogy Collection numbers more than 40,000 volumes, including more than 10,000 family histories. Many of these are rare, out-of-print books. The Genealogy Department also contains a collection of Los Angeles city directories that dates all the way back to 1873.

About the California Index

The California Index is an index created in-house at Los Angeles Public Library that points a person to books, newspaper/magazine articles, photos and vertical files related to people, buildings, neighborhoods, industries and events important to California, with an emphasis on Los Angeles and Southern California. Currently, there are currently nearly 600,000 records in the Index. Here is direct link to the online section of the index: www.lapl.org/collections-resources/lapl-indexes/california-index
